Abstract

Intellectual property rights involve several expensive processes such as patent value creation and monetization. Unfortunately, these processes are often inefficient. On average, only a small percentage of a company’s IP assets truly generate revenues, leaving the rest to collect expensive dust. It is therefore extremely important for any patent holders, with limited resources, to obtain valuable IP assets at the time of creation.

This talk covers various basic tips and pitfalls in IP protection in a clear and concise manner from the unique perspective of engineers, aiming at helping them create valuable assets that could be capitalized in the future. Samples of topics include common misconceptions about patent rights, basics of patent law, how to best work with patent attorneys or agents, publication vs. patenting, what are valuable patents and how to evaluate a patent etc. Intended audiences are inventors/IP managers, whether working in enterprises, start-up companies or entrepreneurs.
